On Sunday, September 17th, at the Los Angeles Rams and  Washington Redskins game, the Los Angeles Memorial Stadium was filled with red jerseys. Redskins fans traveled over 3,000 miles from home to see their team earn a victory, 27-20. The stadium has a capacity of 93,607 and 56,612 Redskins fans filled the seats on Sunday. The Redskins fans were the highlight of the game, with Kirk Cousins, the quarterback, not being able to even hear Coach Jay Gruden’s play calls.

The fact that the Rams moved away from the thousands of fans that were in St. Louis contributes to the lack of fan base in L.A. The Rams moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1995 and remained there for 20 years. In 2015 they filed for relocation back to LA, and they were approved. Those 20 years in St. Louis gave them an unimaginable fan base that loved them for 20 years.

The Redskins fan attendance may have sparked something within every player on the field, but that wouldn’t be the case for the Rams.  Some highlights for the Redskins include Ryan Kerrigan’s forced fumble on Jared Goff, Josh Norman and Terrell McClain compression tackles, and a punch out that caused Todd Gurley to fumble. Mason Foster’s game ending interception on the Rams final drive helped to put the final nail in the coffin. Dustin Hopkins also had a fantastic day of kicking over in LA, as he finished the game going ⅔ on field goals, and 3/3 on extra points. Kirk Cousins, the prodigal son of the Redskins offense, had himself one of the best games of the maturing 2017 season.

Nex Wilson (neighbor to author), one of the fans who traveled the 3000 miles, commented on the fan attendance, “It was amazing. As soon as the game started you could feel the energy from all the red jerseys. Redskins fans aren’t near the level of Seattle Seahawks fans, but we came pretty close that day. It was almost as if the Redskins players were feeding off of us, and that’s the reason we came away with a victory.”

Senior Oakdale football player, Bobby Koehler, gave insight on what he thought,

“The Redskins had an intensity that was only reinforced by the thousands of Redskins fans in LA that Sunday afternoon.”

The Redskins play the undefeated Oakland Raiders, Sunday night at 8:30 on primetime.
