With the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 earlier this month, the 2017 summer movie season has officially begun. Most of the blockbusters continue to follow the modern trend of sequels, remakes, and reboots, with fifteen of them being released between May and August. In addition, there are also many smaller, original movies being released as well to add variation and interest to this summer’s movie season.

Some of the most anticipated franchise films this summer include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Wonder Woman, Cars 3, Transformers: The Last Night, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and War for the Planet of the Apes. Original movies include Dunkirk; Everything, Everything; It Comes at Night; and The Dark Tower.

“So far, the best movie I’ve seen [since January] this year has been Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” stated junior Kaela Baker, a fan of the action, sci-fi, and superhero genres. “I’m hoping movies like Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and Justice League will also live up to my expectations!”

Sophomores Madeline Wilson and Sara Welgoss, as well as art teacher Mr. William Bingman, also expressed excitement about the new Wonder Woman movie, being released June 2nd. They all listed it as one of the movies they are most looking forward to seeing this year.

“It’s exciting because there aren’t many movies about female superheroes. I think it will be one of the summer’s biggest blockbusters,” added Baker.

Other students were interested in seeing Everything, Everything, a teen romance/drama released last weekend.

“[Everything, Everything] is based off of a book, and reminds me somewhat of a John Green story. I’m excited to see it, normally I like movies like that,” Wilson said.

Mr. Bingman, a fan of horror movies, also listed Alien and It Comes at Night as movies he was looking forward to seeing. “I think It Comes at Night will be one of this summer’s biggest movies, as it’s original, and supposed to actually be scary.”

Additionally, both students and teachers are getting fed up with the never ending stream of sequels, reboots, and remakes coming from Hollywood. They think they are unwanted, unnecessary, and uncreative, and being used as a way to get easy money.

“They’ve ran out of ideas, and the movies normally aren’t very good,” Welgoss remarked. “However, normally Disney is quality, and I want to see the Pirates of the Caribbean movie.”

“They’re lame, and movies that I’ve already seen, but worse,” added Mr. Bingman.

Despite many of this year’s major films being rehashes of stories everyone has seen before, there are still multiple releases to look forward to this summer.
